If there were a gold medal for celebrity DUI arrests, Michael Phelps would definitely be a champion. The Olympian was arrested for his second DUI in Baltimore, Maryland early in the morning of Tuesday, September 30, 2014.

Phelps was speeding in the Fort McHenry Tunnel on Interstate 95 when he was stopped by Maryland Transportation Authority Police at around 1:40 am.

According to the police statement, “Mr. Phelps was identified as the driver by his driver’s license and appeared to be under the influence. He was unable to perform satisfactorily a series of standardized field sobriety tests.”

The officer arrested Phelps and took him to a transportation authority station. Phelps was charged with driving under the influence, excessive speed and crossing double-lane lines.

After being released hours later, Phelps issued the following apology in a public statement:

“Earlier this morning, I was arrested and charged with DUI, excessive speeding and crossing double lane lines. I understand the severity of my actions and take full responsibility. I know these words may not mean much right now but I am deeply sorry to everyone I have let down.”

Phelps was previously arrested for a DUI in Maryland back in 2004. He was on probation for 18 months and paid a fine. He was also required to give a presentation to students about alcohol awareness.

USA Swimming, the national governing body of the sport, was particularly disappointed to hear the news that Phelps was arrested.

“The news regarding Michael Phelps and his actions are disappointing and unquestionably serious,” the USA Swimming statement reads. “We expect our athletes to conduct themselves responsibly in and out of the pool.”

USA Swimming could potentially suspend Phelps from future competitions.
