The cornerback for the Kansas City Chiefs, Sean Smith, was arrested for a DUI early Monday morning (June 9, 2014) in Kansas City.

Smith was driving under the influence when he attempted to make a left turn at 12th Street and Grand Boulevard. Smith then lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a light post. Unfortunately for Smith, police witnessed this whole incident take place.

An officer approached the vehicle and realized that Smith seemed super confused and was mumbling incoherent sentences. The officer asked Smith if he required any medical assistance, but Smith said he did not.

Smith was arrested for a DUI and will also be facing charges for careless driving and driving without insurance.

Smith’s car did sustain some damages to its front end and undercarriage.

A representative for The Chiefs issued the following statement:

“We are aware of the situation involving Sean Smith. Whenever one of our players is involved in an incident like this it is disappointing. We will have no further comment at this time as this is an ongoing legal matter.”

If convicted of a DUI, Smith could face possible jail time, expensive fines and a license suspension. Furthermore, he may have to attend rehab or DUI classes depending on the judge’s assessment of Smith’s issues with alcohol.

Additionally, Smith may have to face penalties from the NFL, including a fine, rehab or a game suspension. The NFL is still figuring out what to do when a player gets a DUI but chances are they are going to enforce harsher penalties.
