Virginia State quarterback Tarian Ayres was arrested for a DUI in Waverly, VA and will be facing a suspension.

On Sunday, November 9, Ayres, a sophomore, was caught speeding on the westbound US 460. A police officer stopped Ayres after the athlete was swerving.

Though Waverly police did not release Ayres’ blood-alcohol concentration level, the arresting officer did determine that Ayres was under the influence. The officer gave Ayres a field sobriety test as well as a breathalyzer test. Ayres was described as cooperative during the process and a “complete gentleman.”

Ayres did have a couple passengers in the vehicle with him. However, their names were not released.

Ayres was officially charged with a DUI, underage possession of alcohol, and speeding. He is due to appear in Sussex County General District Court on November 18.

The Virginia State director of university relations issued a statement the following Tuesday that Ayres has been suspended from the team. He will be suspended from Saturday’s CIAA title game against Winston-Salem State.

“Our players understand our expectations and also the consequences for not abiding by these expectations, regardless of the importance of a game,” stated Virginia State head coach Latrell Scott.

Ayres was previously charged with underage possession of alcohol back in March of 2013. However, court records state that the charge was later dismissed. If found guilty of a DUI, Ayres could be facing a license suspension, community service, or alcohol education classes. He may also have to pay some pretty expensive fines and face discipline from Virginia State.
